When I was in elementary school, I loved summer reading programs. As I got older, I participated in Battle of the Books every year. Battle of the Books is when a group of about 5 students read 5 books and “battle” against other teams as the moderator quizzes them by asking questions from each book. I was that overachiever who read all 5 books.
So, when it comes down to it, I would love for my son to fall in love with books at a young age as well. We often go to Barnes & Noble, grab a drink from the Starbucks inside, and spend an afternoon reading books. Then he picks out his favorite two books to buy and take home. Usually any books with dogs are the winners.
We absolutely enjoy our time spent at Barnes & Noble, and I love them even more because of their summer reading program. Although my son is too young to participate, I am looking forward to future years.
Barnes & Noble’s Summer Reading Program is available to school-aged children in grades 1-6, and gives kids a free book when they read 8 books over the summer. The first step is to download a summer reading journal to record books read, which part of the book is their favorite, and why. Kids have until September 5th, 2017 to turn in their completed journal to get their FREE reading adventure from the book list featured on the back of the journal (and listed below). Please note: Only one free book is available per child.
